Renamo leadership battle opens, with $1mn per year at stake - CIP Mozambique Elections
Renamo provincial headquarters in Manica, in central Mozambique, has been burnt down by persons unknown. No arrests have been made, and police say they have yet to receive an official complaint.
DW Africa tried to contact the Renamo provincial delegate, Sofrim Furai Matequenha, to establish the severity of the damage and who was suspected of being responsible, but his deputy, the president of the Renamo Youth League in Manica, who declined to give his name could not provide any concrete information, referred questions to “those from Frelimo”.
Fire consumes the interior of the delegation
Nearby business owners and residents also declined to speak on the record for fear of reprisals, and would only say that they were “surprised to see the building on fire”.
“After the flames had consumed the walls and windows we saw the fire brigade on the site, fighting the fire that had already destroyed everything that was inside the delegation” they said. The building, they maintained, must have been set on fire in the early hours of Monday, because they did not see those responsible.
PRM have no knowledge of the case
Manica provincial police spokesperson Elcídia Filipe told DW Africa that the fire had not been reported to the authorities, and so they could not provide any details.
“The corporation has not received any complaint from Renamo, and therefore has no reason to intervene. We have no knowledge of the case,” she said.
