Bangladesh elected VP for 71st UNGA session
Bangladesh was elected on Monday as one of 21 vice-presidents (VP) of the United Nations General Assembly's 71st session, something diplomatic sources say will help the country augment its active participation.
Earlier, Ambassador Peter Thomson of Fiji was elected to be the session's president for one year, beating Cyprus Ambassador Andreas Mavroyiannis in a close 94 to 90 vote with seven invalid ballots and one abstention.
Of the remaining VPs, five are the permanent members. The remaining elected VPs are Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Mauritania, Nigeria and Zambia (Africa); Nepal, Solomon Islands and Turkmenistan (Asia-Pacific); Armenia (Eastern Europe); Bahamas, Belize and El Salvador (Latin America and Caribbean); and Belgium and Germany (Western Europe and others).
Bangladesh's candidature was endorsed by the Asia-Pacific Group.
