According to analysis relating to the 2015/16 Serie A season, Inter were involved in the two matches that attracted the highest number of spectators to the stands.

Inter, who led the table until after the Christmas recess, almost registered a full house in their two home games against big rivals Juventus and Milan.

On both occasions, 79,154 spectators went through the turnstiles at the San Siro.

The fans attending Inter’s home matches started to dwindle at the turn of the new year as Roberto Mancini’s side bowed out of the title race. Eventually they settled for fourth place and outside the Champions League zone.

By season’s end, Inter’s average attendance dropped to 45,538, still the best in Serie A but reflecting a 56.91 per cent occupancy level given that the San Siro has a capacity of 80,018.

The Juventus Stadium – home of the Bianconeri since 2011/12 – recorded an average occupancy level of 92.69 per cent last season.

That’s in line with the levels of the Premier League (95.96 per cent) and those from the Bundesliga (92.86 per cent).

In Serie A, the next best in terms of average occupancy behind Juventus, were Frosinone (relegated after only one year in the top flight) with 76.07 per cent.

The Juventus Stadium was built on the same site of the Stadio delle Alpi. It is one of only three club-owned in Serie A, the others being Sassuolo’s Mapei Stadium and the Dacia Arena, of Udinese.

Sassuolo, who finished a surprising sixth last season, had a poor average occupancy – less than 53 per cent.

Udinese did a lot better in this respect – 71.40 per cent.

Overall, the Serie A had an average of 57.80 per cent occupancy in season 2015-16.

That figure puts Italy bottom of the list when compared to average attendances in the Big Five leagues – the Premier League (95.96 per cent), Bundesliga (92.86), La Liga (68.80) and Ligue 1 (67.71).
