Neendakara falls into slumber
Kollam: An otherwise bustling Neendakara harbour wore a gloomy look on Tuesday. Many vessels that were out in the sea had returned early and were docked on the eastern side of the Neendakara bridge.
The fishermen were of the opinion that apart from announcing free ration scheme, no measures were taken by the government to improve their sad situation.
"The one-and-a-half month monsoon is the hardest time for any fisher family in the state. Many who are working on the boats have to find another job during this period. The free rationing system would only alleviate half the worry," said A Jesudasan, a fisherman.
A public announcement on trawling ban was made along coastal regions of the district from Paravoor to Azheekkal on Tuesday. The fuel pumps along the coast meant for refuelling the fishing vessels in the districts were closed, except for the pumps run by Matsyafed in Sakthikulangara and Azheekkal. The authorities have allowed to operate these pumps to fill fuel for the non-trawling fishing vessels during the ban time.
Special police force was already deployed along the Thangasseri, Neendakara, and Azheekkal areas to deal with any law and order situation. Control rooms will be opened at Neendakara and Azheekal on Wednesday. Marine police and safety squad will be conducting 24-hour patrolling along Azheekkal, Neendakara, and Thangasseri coasts. TNN
