Fake doctor, practicing for 30 years, held

A fake doctor from Kamathipura was arrested on Monday, after he spent 30 years practicing Ayurveda in the area. The accused, Shankar Kurry, 61, was arrested following a complaint by the BMC, in what is yet another example of the rising menace of quacks in the city.

The BMC officials said that a team of civic officials along with officers from Nagpada Police Station raided Shri Sai Clinic, run by Kurry, who claimed to have graduated from the All India Ayurveda Vidyapeeth in Delhi in the 1980s.

“He had submitted fake certificates to the Maharashtra Council of Indian Medicines for a doctor’s licence. A scrutiny of his documents revealed he hadn’t even completed the course,” Dr Sandeep Gaikwad, the BMC’s medical officer for E Ward, said.

Gaikwad said a dummy patient was sent to Kurry’s clinic. “He randomly prescribed him dosage of medicines in a small pouch. It was obvious that he had little knowledge of medicines,” Gaikwad said.

Last year, 90 fake doctors were arrested, and the number has already reached 40 this year. “We have launched a crackdown against fake doctors. Medical officer in each ward is responsible for identifying such offenders,” Dr Rajesh Madan, deputy executive health officer, said.
