Trio stages accident in Sant Cruz, robs man’s Rs-40k smartphone
A 24-year-old event manager from Kandivali has registered a case with the Santa Cruz police against a trio who robbed his costly smartphone from inside his car, after staging a fake accident at the Milan subway signal.

The police say that this is the fourth such incident to happen at the Milan subway signal and in the same way. It has also come to light that the accused, who were arrested in the three previous cases, have been granted bail.

Speaking to Mirror, the complainant, Kashyap Kotecha, said that he was heading to his residence from an event in Khar at around 9.30 pm when the incident took place. “The signal was about to turn red, so I slowed down,” Kotecha said. “As I approached the signal, one of the three men pretended to be crossing the road from the left side of the signal and came and stopped near my car.”

He goes on: “As soon as the man stood near my car, he began to scream for help, claiming that I had run over his foot, which he said was still stuck under the wheel. When I rolled down the left window, two other men came to the right side of my car and told me to help the man. I was so distracted that I did not realise that my smartphone, which was near the hand brake of my car, was taken by the apparently-injured man on the left.”

Kotecha approached the police the next day and registered a complaint for the theft of his smartphone, which is worth over Rs 40,000.

Shantanu Pawar, a senior police inspector from Santacruz beat police station, said that this wasn’t the first such case to be reported in that area. “We have registered three such cases in the past and arrested the accused in those cases too. They were granted bail by the court recently and after we registered this case, we went on a lookout for the men who were arrested in the previous cases. So far, they have been untraceable,” Pawar said.
