Poll-weary TRS asks Gutha to hang on to his LS seat?
Hyderabad: After facing a series of elections since September last year, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) appears averse to face another byelection in the near future. The party reportedly indicated to the leaders joining it that unless it is inevitable, there was no need to create a situation that calls for a byelection.
This was apparently the advice given by the TRS to Congress MP from Nalgonda Gutha Sukhender Reddy, who along with two other MLAs Bhaskar Rao (Miryalguda) and Ravindra Naik (Devarakonda) decided to join the ruling party on June 15.
Sukhender Reddy reportedly expressed his desire to resign as an MP and continue in state politics. The MP reportedly sought a position either as an MLC or any other post in the state.
But TRS supremo K Chandrasekhar Rao reportedly advised Sukhender Reddy not to resign from Lok Sabha as the TRS does not want to face any byelection in the near future unless it becomes unavoidable. TRS faced more than half a dozen elections including bypolls to two Lok Sabha and two assembly constituencies, MLC elections and civic bodies such as GHMC and Warangal and Khammam corporations in the past two years. The bypolls began as soon as KCR took over the reins of the state following which he resigned from the Medak Lok Sabha seat and party nominee Kotha Prabhakar Reddy won the by-election.
Since last September, the party contested half a dozen elections including bypolls to Warangal Lok Sabha seat and Palair and Narayankhed assembly constituencies apart from GHMC, Warangal, Khammam municipal corporations and other municipalities in the state.
"The party is not going for elections every time an MLA or MP from other parties joins TRS as it will be a burden on the state exchequer despite the party winning all elections it contested," a senior TRS leader said.
Meanwhile, the Congress is contemplating fielding former Union minister S Jaipal Reddy from Nalgonda if Sukhender Reddy quits and elections are necessitated. Jaipal Reddy, who was a Lok Sabha member from Chevella, was once an MP from Miryalguda Lok Sabha constituency in Nalgonda district. But Jaipal Reddy is reluctant to contest in the elections and he reportedly suggested that Nalgonda MLA Komatireddy Venkat Reddy or his brother and MLC and former MP from Bhongir, Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy be fielded in case of a bypoll.
But they too are learnt to be reluctant to contest and assured the party high command that they would take up the responsibility of campaigning and ensuring the victory of the party candidate if elections are held.
