Dhobi keeps word, surrenders in court
Ahmedabad: Kailash Dhobi, an absconding convict in the Gulbarg Society massacre case, voluntarily surrendered before the court on Monday, on the day designated judge P B Desai fixed the date of sentencing. After the Gujarat high court refused extension of his temporary bail on January 25, this year, he did not surrender to jail authorities on January 29 jumping conditions of his bail, but had sent a letter to the high court informing that he would turn himself in on the day of judgment.

In his letter, Dhobi had justified his actions pointing out that delay in judicial proceedings has kept him behind bars for 14 years, and he was not optimistic of the judgment being delivered any time soon.
Dhobi had been arrested in 2002, and since then, his petitions for regular bail have been refused by all courts, including the Supreme Court.
On Monday, Dhobi came to the courtroom with his advocate, a few minutes after the court fixed the day of judgment, and before police could nab him. The judge called in SIT officials and ordered them to send Dhobi to Sabarmati Central Jail.
