SDL Inc. (San Jose, CA) reported a record $35.7 million in revenues for the first quarter of fiscal year 1999 (ended March 31), up 41% from the $25.4 million reported in the first quarter of 1998. Net income for the quarter reached $3.0 million ($0.19 per share, diluted), which includes $2.2 million in charges ($0.14 per share), related to the acquisition of Polaroid's fiber laser business completed in February 1999. Pro forma net income was $5.1 million ($0.33 per share, diluted), compared to $2.7 million ($0.19 per share) for the same period in 1998.

Company chairman and CEO Donald Scifres attributed the robust quarter to strong performance in the company's telecommunications product business.
