Highest single day arrests in Bengal

Kolkata: A staggering 9,466 people were arrested in coordinated raids all over Bengal on Sunday setting a record for highest number of arrests in a single-day in the state.
Among those arrested 936 persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in specific cases; 8530 had arrest warrants issued against them by the courts.
The precisely planned raids involved all state police units including the railway police and units from various police commissionerates.
ADG (Law and Order) Anuj Sharma said, "1501 arrest warrants were executed and 102 illegal firearms were seized. 102 rounds of ammunition and 724 crude bombs were also seized. Around Rs1.85 lakh board money and 25,085 litre of illicit liquor were confiscated."
A senior state police officer said the sheer number of arrests indicated that such an operation has never happened in Bengal before. "This shows a greater sense of purpose and enhanced coordination which is the bulwark of any police force. More importantly, the action also indicated a political will to weed out the criminal elements for it causes more harm than good," the officer said. According to sources in police, DGP Surajit Kar Purakayastha got chief minister's nod for the raids.
Experts believe that the raids are indicative of a newly developed strategy by the state to keep up the heat against anti-socials year-around than against case specific reactions. A senior officer said that the raids will continue to remain part of the state police's overall crime control measures.
