JEE results: Patna student tops in IIT-Guwahati zone

Guwahati: Ishan Tarunesh from Patna stood first in the IIT-Guwahati zone of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)-Advanced 2016, results of which were declared on Sunday.
Tarunesh received an all-India rank of 33.
The IIT-Guwahati zone, which includes the northeastern states and parts of Bihar and north Bengal, fared well in the exam. About one-fourth of the students who took the exam from the zone qualified.

A total of 12,554 candidates appeared for the exam from the IIT-Guwahati zone and 2,468 qualified. Ten students from the zone secured a position in the top-500.
"The successful students can now seek admission to various undergraduate courses across the 22 IITs and Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad.
"The IIT-Guwahati zone has been able to produce excellent results in JEE-Advanced this year. Based on their score and choice of seats, they can seek admission to the IITs or ISM Dhanbad," said director of IIT-Guwahati Gautam Biswas, who is also the chairman of the joint admission board of the JEE-Advanced.

Aman Bansal from Jaipur topped this year's list of successful candidates and Riya Singh (all-India rank of 133) from Kota topped among women.
Overall, 1,47,678 candidates appeared for the JEE exam conducted by IIT Guwahati this year and 36566 qualified.
The number of qualified candidates in each IIT zone is: Bombay - 8,810, Delhi - 5,941, Guwahati - 2,468, Kanpur - 4,443, Kharagpur - 4,560, Madras - 6,702 and Roorkee - 3,642.
