Yelagiri Hills soon to be 'King of hills', says tourism minister

Yelagiri Hills is poised to shake off its tag as the poor man's Ooty. It will soon become the 'king' among the hill stations in the state, according to tourism minister Vellamandi N Natarajan.

Vellore: Yelagiri Hills is poised to shake off its tag as the poor man's Ooty. It will soon become the 'king' among the hill stations in the state, according to tourism minister Vellamandi N Natarajan.
"We will take measures to make Yelagiri as the Arasan (king) of hill stations. I have assured the district collector (R Nanthagopal) that I will allocate funds for tourism development activities in the district after seeking permission from the chief minister," he said after inaugurating the two-day summer festival at the Hills on Saturday.
The festival kicked started with an array of cultural programmes. Fruit and flower show at the Nature Park attracted the tourists, while several tourists went boating. Government departments have put up stalls to create awareness about welfare schemes, while several SHGs put up stalls to sell a variety of products.
Panchayat president of Yelagiri Hills C Achudhan urged the ministers and district administration to desilt and repair the check dams to conserve the rain water. He also requested them to extend the Combined Water Supply scheme to the villages in the Hills, besides establishing a sub-station to provide power connection to all the 14 villages in the hills. He also urged the government to establish a hostel for girl students.
