James Corden takes aim at the Oscars, Trump in his Tonys opening
James Corden wasted no time in his opening performance and monologue during the Tony Awards Sunday night. The host emerged in the middle of the cast of Hamilton, joking about what everyone was thinking going into the night's ceremony.
"Tonight's show will not be all about Hamilton. There will also be some commercial breaks."
The zingers kept flying as the host started taking viewers' minds off the tragedy in Orlando, condemning the act of violence and hatred before getting on with the night as planned.
"This is like the Super Bowl for people who don't know what the Super Bowl is," he said, along with a pointed quip towards that other big awards show earlier this year.
"Think of tonight as the Oscars, but with diversity."
And he couldn't resist a chance to take a jab at the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. The Tony nominations are so diverse, "Donald Trump has threatened to build a wall around" the theater, he said.
Maybe he should move to hosting the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor next?
