Flyovers near KBR Park necessary?
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC)'s Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP), which envisages a series of flyovers, skyways and grade separators, has included some 'unnecessary' structures at some junctions but has left out on many spots where junction improvements are actually required.
Consider this. Development of six junctions has been taken up around KBR Park as part of the SRDP, including KBR Park entrance, Jubilee Hills checkpost, Road No.
45, Film Nagar junction, Maharaja Agrasen junction (Road No. 12) and Cancer Hospital junction (Road No. 10) in Banjara Hills. The civic body is spending about Rs 586 crore for the construction of multi-level flyovers at these junctions.
Official sources said traffic at Cancer Hospital and Maharaja Agrasen junction is not much compared to other junctions such as Jubilee Hills checkpost, Film Nagar and Road No. 45.
But, sources said that the GHMC had earlier proposed work on these two junctions to appease the government. The municipal corporation is set to spend about Rs 53 and Rs 70 crore respectively on the Agrasen and Cancer Hospital junction flyovers.
Similarly, there is no alarming traffic volume at Mind Space and Bio-diversity Park junctions to invite any structures, they said.
"Some junctions such as Uppal, Habsiguda, Ranigunj, Masab Tank and ECIL record high traffic and require flyovers and grade separators. But the corporation has not given priority to these junctions. Proposals to decongest Raj Bhavan Road by constructing a link road from the Necklace Road MMTS station have not been taken up by the corporation," S Chandrasekhar, an RTI activist, said.

The engineering wing of GHMC has so far surveyed all major corridors in the city and decided to turn 200 junctions signal-free in a phased manner based on the Comprehensive Transportation Study (CTS) conducted by LEA Associates. To begin with, the GHMC identified 54 junctions where work needs to be taken up immediately. While 20 flyovers are being planned in the first phase, work at BHEL, Allwyn, Kothaguda, Gachibowli, Khajaguda, Nanalnagar, Rethibowli and Masab Tank were proposed in the second phase of SRDP.
Uppal and Rasoolpura junctions were included in the first phase but were dropped later by the corporation due to various reasons.
Work on Uppal junction did not start due to land acquisition problems with the Survey of India and Rasoolpura junction due to Metro rail work. Abids to Chaderghat and Malakpet multi-level work was dropped in view of Metro work.
"Despite the ongoing Metro works, GHMC sent proposals to the state government for flyovers at places like Abids to Chaderghat and Rasoolpura and took administrative sanction for them. Instead, flyovers can be constructed Masab Tank and ECIL, where there are no Metro rail works," M Srinivas Rao, working group member of Hyderabad Zindabad, an NGO, said.
It is also a fact that GHMC is struggling to get funds for Phase I of SRDP and mobilising funds for the second phase would be a daunting task, he said.
