Tarn Taran rape: Accused Akali leader surrenders before court

Deputy superintendent of police (city) Harpal Singh said they were conducting raids on possible hideouts. The accused had been sent to Patti sub-jail, he added.
The case was registered on complaint of an 18-year-old girl, a resident of Kuharka village, on May 21 at Sadar police station under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Two days after the first information report (FIR) was lodged, the police had arrested the complainant in an old murder case, in which she was a co-accused, resulting in outrage.
Accusing the police of inaction against the Akali leader, the farmers, under the banner of Kisan Sangharsh Committee (KSC), had carried out protest. An altercation took place between KSC activists and pro-SAD sarpanches, who were came out in support of the accused, on June 3.
However, the farmers lifted their dharna after the police promised that the accused would be arrested by June 7.
