Vees Mhanje Vees Movie Review

A few years back, Arun Nalawade featured in the film 'Majhi Shala' which was somewhat based on similar lines. The subject of access to primary education in rural areas is one that a lot of filmmakers have dealt with and almost every point, right from hesitant parents to uninterested pupils and regressive approach have been shown onscreen. So, it hardly comes as a surprise when 'Vees Mhanje Vees' doesn’t keep you involved. It simply presents what has already been presented before.

The film starts with Anna (Bhise), a school-teacher, announcing his decision to take voluntary retirement and start a school at his native place. Anna is respected by the villagers who readily agree to send their kids to his classes. Unfortunately, the aged school-master suffers a paralysis stroke and is bedridden but wants the school to keep functioning. Enter his daughter Shailaja (Godbole). The college youngster promises her father to take care of the school and manage her studies as well. Initially she faces some problems but soon, kids start attending school regularly. It is here that the district education officer drops a bomb. He says that the government can give recognition to a school that has 20 students at least. Anna’s school has only 11. So, Shailaja begins her endeavour to get as many students enrolled as possible but the road ahead is not smooth.

The minute the film starts, you know that this one will have a happy ending. There are problems but each comes with a solution. The story is not exciting but some instances are heartwarming. The kids are adorable and Mrinmayee’s performance is balanced. The same can’t be said about the other actors though.

Being an NFDC production, one expects a lot from 'Vees Mhanje Vees' but alas, this is just an old wine in a new bottle.
