The diminutive house sparrow, which once was the most common bird in the world, has been on the decline over much of its natural range, both in the urban and rural habitats.

NASHIK: Nature Forever Society’s (NFS) ‘I love sparrows’ global campaign, which was aimed at highlighting the common man’s love for the house sparrow as well as the fact that conservation is no longer restricted to researchers, conservationists and environmentalists. In fact, it entered the Limca Book of Records recently with about one million people from all walks of life, including children, senior citizens, homemakers and corporate executives, participating in the event that was held in connection with the World Sparrow Day on March 20th.

NFS created posters with 20 different themes and posted them on various social media platforms from where people could download whatever theme they wanted to be associated with. For example, a blogger could select ‘I love sparrows’ and blog for them, while others chose ‘I feed them’; ‘I say no to pesticide and insecticides’; ‘I say no to nylon threads’; ‘I plant native trees’; ‘I am a sparrow story teller’; ‘I am a sparrow photographer’ etc.

NFS founder-president Mohammed Dilawar said, “The campaign is aimed at raising awareness and asking people to pledge their support by taking simple practical measures to save house sparrows and make conservation functional”. Dilawar added that the campaign would not have been possible without the support of NFS members, sparrow lovers, conservation partners and the Indian media.

The campaign helped create habitat and awareness for the diminutive house sparrow, which once was the most common bird in the world, but in the past few years, has been on the decline over much of its natural range, both in the urban and rural habitats.

“The goal of the campaign is to collectively inspire as many people as possible to get involved in the conservation of house sparrows and their habitats across the planet,” said Dilawar.
