Saroj Sharma and Shibani Desai were elected on Friday as the new chairperson and co-chairperson of the Business Women Wing (BWW) of the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI).

Ahmedabad: Saroj Sharma and Shibani Desai were elected on Friday as the new chairperson and co-chairperson of the Business Women Wing (BWW) of the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI). The election for these posts were held for the first time, on Friday. Only 50% of 150 BWW members exercised their franchise.
The annual general meeting of the BWW was held in the evening and the outgoing chairperson, Grishma Trivedi, handed over charge to Sharma.
Sharma got 35 votes while Rekhaben Adhwaryu and Urvi J Chauhan got 27 and 12. In the case of the co-chairperson, Desai got 43 votes while Heena B Shah polled 32 votes.
After her victory, Sharma said, "I will connect with women from the grassroots, support them and provide them with a platform." Women's business should not be limited to food and jewellery sectors, she said. "I will facilitate training of women so that they can take up jobs such as driving taxis," she said.
Sharma, who owns an industrial boiler manufacturing unit in Chatral, said: "I will try to bring in more associate members into the BWW. We will also seek to arrange funds from banks for women."
Desai, who runs a chocolate business, said that she will work to boost BWW membership to 500-600. "Also there are many business opportunities within the BWW. We will explore that as well," Desai said.
