Nearly 200 illegal and temporary structures which had cropped up in Vijayanagar were demolished in a special drive conducted by the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) on Friday.

The demolition was carried out to clear the pedestrian path which were occupied by hawkers and vendors. The corporation was assisted by the Abhaya squad which used heavy demolition machinery to raze the illegal structures.

Zonal Assistant Commissioner Mahesh Babu led the operations. Corporation Commissioner C.G. Betsurmath said there were complaints that the vendors had become a public nuisance blocking footpath while the fast food vendors were conducting their business under unhygienic conditions. The area below the high tension double road was fully encroached upon by the fast food vendors and the encroachments were cleared, he added.

Taking a serious note of the proliferation of the hawkers, Mr. Betsurmath said the corporation would not tolerate encroachment of public space and violation of cleanliness and hygienic conditions. The recent eviction of street hawkers near the Town Hall has not yielded the desired results as the vendors were back in business and hence the MCC was chalking out an action plan to clear encroachers, he added.
