Transparency is a must, says Agriculture Minister

Officials told to ensure availability of quality seeds, fertiliser to ryots

Ahead of the kuruvai cultivation, the government has asked the agricultural officials to provide quality raw materials in time to the farmers.

At a review meeting in the Secretariat on Friday, Agriculture Minister R. Doraikannu asked the officials to ensure the availability of quality seeds, adequate quantity of fertilisers, required pesticides to the farmers very close to their fields.

Besides, he also asked the agricultural officers to monitor the distribution of agricultural equipment and precision farming to ensure the farmers were using the equipment continuously.

The Minister also urged the department to usher in maximum transparency by publishing the beneficiaries list on the web and asked the superiors to check the veracity of the list. The department should give e-receipts to the farmers and the details of the raw materials provided should be sent as an SMS to each and every farmer and the assistant directors of the department should guarantee the operational efficiency of the system.

Working in co-ordination with the related departments, the beneficiaries list should be prepared and prioritised, the Minister listed out the various achievements of the State over the past five years. Tamil Nadu had won Krishi Karman award at the national for three years by producing over 100 lakh metric tonnes of food grains in four of the past five years. It was ranked one in banana production. Agriculture Secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi and Agriculture Commissioner Shambu Kallolikar were present.

Surprise inspection

A surprise inspection was carried out by S.P. Velumani, Minsiter for Municipal Administration, Rural Development and Implementation of Special Programmes at the Amma Unavagam functioning in Model School Road, Thousand Lights here on Wednesday.

The Minister along with Corporation Commissioner B. Chandramohan and Mayor Saidai Duraisamy visited the Amma Unavagam with a team of officials and inspected the preparation and serving of food in the canteen.

New Amma Unavagam

An inspection of the ongoing construction of the Amma Unavagam in Wallace Garden road was also carried out and Mr. Velumani asked for the works to be expedited so that the canteen can begin functioning within the next ten days.

The new outlet will be one among the 34 Amma Unavagams in the Teynampet zone. At present, a total of 300 Amma Unavagams are functioning across the Greater Chennai Corporation limits.
