Lahane out of JJ, promoted… for 360 days
Dr TP Lahane, Dean of Sir JJ hospital, on Friday was promoted as a joint director of Directorate of Medication Education and Research (DMER). However, Dr Lahane is yet to formally accept the post as the promotion is valid for 360 days.

Dr Lahane told Mumbai Mirror, “Though I am happy, I don’t know why this promotion is only for 360 days. I don’t have any choice but to accept it, as per the protocol. I am only worried about my patients. I used to see 300 patients every day and also I used to take camps in villages and used to operate over 50,000 patients in a year. So my patients will be affected.”

The 59-year-old senior ophthalmologist who has made a name for himself for a record one lakh number of cataract surgeries has served 20 years in JJ hospital, of which six were as dean. On Friday morning, state medical education’s five-member ad hoc committee took the decision and sent an official letter to Dr Lahane. Dr Medha Gadgil, principal secretary of Medical Education and Dr Pravin Shingare, director of DMER, were present in the meeting.

Talking to Mirror, Dr Shingare said, “We have promoted Dr Lahane for 360 days; yes it is a temporary post, but this is how the ad hoc makes appointments. In the past too, the promotion have been given on ad hoc basis. The joint director post was empty since the last two years and Dr Lahane was given additional charge. But as Dean of JJ Hospital, he was unable to manage the both the responsibilities, so he was complete charge of joint director.”

Dr Shingare added, “In fact, we have requested him to take the post because he is a good administrator. So instead of looking after just one hospital, he will now be overlooking 14 medical colleges.” —MMB
