Ireland's Leona Maguire helped Great Britain and Ireland get off to the ideal start before the United States fought back to finish the first day of the 39th Curtis Cup on level terms.

World No.2 Maguire helped contribute two points for the hosts at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club, combining with Charlotte Thomas to put the first point on the board in the morning foursomes with a 4&2 win over Andrea Lee and Mika Liu.

GB & I held a 2-1 lead after the early exchanges, with Tandragee star Olivia Mehaffey and England's Bronte Law defeating world No.1 Hannah O'Sullivan and Mariel Galdiano 2&1, while Bailey Tardy and Monica Vaughn fought back from three down after eight holes to beat Meghan MacLaren and Ireland's Maria Dunne to prevent the visitors from suffering a whitewash in the opening session.

The home side moved further ahead when Law and Maguire teamed up to win the first fourball match against Bethany Wu and Sierra Brooks.

However, Mehaffey lost her rematch with O'Sullivan and Galdiano on the 18th green and Tardy and Vaughn won 2&1 against MacLaren and Alice Hewson to make the score 3-3.

The United States have won eight of the last nine contests between the top female amateurs from both sides of the Atlantic, although Great Britain and Ireland did taste victory in the last home tie at Nairn in 2012.

Saturday sees another day of foursomes and fourballs before Sunday's singles matches.
