Chandigarh, June 9

Taking a serious view of the alleged involvement of seven PGI employees in the ambulance racket, the five-member committee formed by the institute Director, Dr YK Chawla, has issued summons to the Chief Security Officer (CSO) and the mortuary in-charge. The two have to appear before the committee on June 16 and submit their replies.

Dr Arvind Rajvanshi, chairperson of the committee, said, “The CSO and the mortuary in-charge have been asked to appear before the committee on June 16. The committee will question them to rule out their involvement in the case.”

He said in case they were found involved, strict action would be taken.

“Since the police are handling the case, we are not in a position to comment on the action to be taken against those found guilty,” said Dr Rajvanshi.

The Chandigarh Police had yesterday arrested seven persons — three security guards, three persons who pack bodies and a mortuary attendant — for their alleged involvement in the case.

Those arrested were Vinod Kumar (41), Sashi (34) and Gurkirpal, alias Kala (40), all security guards, Tirathpal (34), Ashwani (38) and his namesake Ashwani (34), all body packers, and Vicky (35), a mortuary attendant.

The police had recently unearthed a racket of unauthorised ambulances being run on the PGI campus. Twelve ambulances were impounded and those who were operating the ambulances were booked in a case of cheating.
