First liver transplant patient done at MCH dies

The 60-year-old Basher from Perumathura who underwent the first liver transplant surgery in a government hospital in the state succumbed to infection on Thursday evening.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 60-year-old Basher from Perumathura who underwent the first liver transplant surgery in a government hospital in the state succumbed to infection on Thursday evening.
The liver transplant surgery was performed on May 23 following which Basheer was undergoing treatment at the critical care unit of the medical college hospital. The liver transplant surgery had created history for the state as it was the first one in the government sector.
The doctors said that there was high risk of infection for the liver transplant patients and Basheer was facing the same risk after the surgery.
He was put on antibiotics ever since the transplant to prevent any infection but could not succeed. All the vital organs were not functioning after the surgery and hence his condition was said to be critical till date. He was on ventilator, said the doctors.
The liver of 21-year-old Dhanish Mohan of Parassalla was transplanted to Basheer. Dhanish had met with a road accident and was declared brain dead after two days of the accident at the medical college hospital. Mohanraj, father of Dhanish, agreed for the organ donation of his son following which the matching recipients for organs was taken up by the Kerala Network for Organ Sharing (KNOS).
Basheer was found to be the matching recipient as per the registration done under the Mrithasanjeevani programme. The liver transplant surgery was performed by a team led by Dr Ramesh Rajan, head of surgical gastroenterology of medical college hospital, along with a team from KIMS Hospital, led by Dr B Venugopal.
