Cape Town - Work on the R60 and R62 that passes through Cogmanskloof between Ashton and Montagu has fallen behind schedule due to problems in Montagu.

Nevertheless, Western Cape department of public works spokesman Brian la Hoe said on Thursday the department had put a plan in place to make up for time lost on the R583 million contract to rehabilitate various sections along the road.

La Hoe said several unexpected factors had slowed down construction in Montagu but that the 36-month contract was is expected to be completed on schedule in the third quarter of 2018.

An asbestor cement water pump line in Long Street between Market Street and the Van Der Merwe Bridge had had to be replaced, he said, because the existing pipe was too shallow and brittle for the construction of the road to continue.

He said the high water table in Long Street also slowed down construction, because the soil was too wet for the lower road layers to be laid.

“Larger stormwater pipes had to be installed, which required deeper and wider excavations,” he said.

La Hoe assured residents and motorists that the construction team understood the frustration and inconvenience caused by the numerous delays and said that the team remained “committed to minimising disruption to businesses and private residents”.
