Offended by the producer character in Iraivi? What about these, then?
Watch film as a film...' very time a movie got into `character' controverE sies, this is the line that Kollywood directors and producers used to cite freedom of cinematic expression. But of late (read the Iraivi controversy) they themselves haven't stood by their words. Word is out, and meetings and forums are being convened, to bring the `errant' director Karthik Subbaraj to book for apparently portraying the character of a producer in a not-so-decent light in his film.
The Producers' Council is even contemplating issuing a red card (something that indicates non-cooperation of the rest of the industrywallahs) against Karthik.
But wait a minute...Haven't Tamil films always portrayed corrupt lawyers, cops, politicians, ruthless and cruel doctors, IT professionals and businessmen into nefarious activities, sci entists and army men who've tried to destroy the country, sell national secrets, evil teachers... there was even a school correspondent as a villain, for god's sake! Clearly , all those in the above professions thought of taking a film as a film. Also, our producer-directors had no qualms whatsoever about clubbing half the professionals in the country under `corrupt' or `illegal' subheads in their films. But when a producer was shown as a villain, it's offence, cudgels, and let's-hang-it-all situation.
Why , if those characters were OK to be portrayed in a bad light in Kollywood films, are producers a not-tobe-touched lot? If the rest of the roles are just characters, then what's wrong with a producer being a character in Iraivi? Look how Tamil films have taken `demeaning' to a whole new level with some of its characterisations in the recent past...
