GURGAON: The MCG has come up with an ambitious plan to build a world-class swimming pool near Palam Vihar, which it claims will be on a par with the one at Delhi's Talkatora Stadium.
Mayor Vimal Yadav said, "Gurgaon lacks a world-class swimming pool. I realised this while I was attending prize distribution ceremony for a student's swimming competition.
Soon, we scouted for a plot where the pools could be built. We zeroed in on a parcel of land behind Columbia Asia Hospital in Palam Vihar. We will soon hire a consultant, and within a year we will build this facility there," he said.
He also said another pool will be built in new Gurgaon. "Both these pools will be constructed on par with Delhi's Talkatora Stadium. We want to organise international competitions here. I have already spoken to the MCG authorities and the construction work will start soon," he said.
Residents, however, are not so impressed with the civic body's plan. "Gurgaon needs basic infrastructure like roads. These are the primary duties of any municipal corporation. Instead of concentrating on these basic necessities, the MCG is trying to divert the attention of the common man by announcing things that are not required right now," Geeta Sarin, a Sector 23 resident, said.
"Constructing a world-class swimming pool is not a bad idea, but where are they going to get water from? The city faces water scarcity every season. The authorities should focus more on basic facilities," OP Kataria, RWA president, sector 12 A, said.
"Roads across the city are in a dilapidated condition. It lacks sanitation facilities and has been facing erratic water supply and outages. The MCG should not forget its primary duties. We are not against the construction of swimming pool. Instead, we want basic facilities to be upgraded," Dinesh Aggarwal, RWA president, Sector 14, said.
