The Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena love-hate relationship spilled over into the railways on Wednesday with Sena MP Rajan Vichare accusing the railways of inviting only BJP leaders for various inaugurations. Sainiks accompanying Vichare showed black flags during a railway function held in Bandra on Wednesday.

Vichare complained that he was not invited for a function held at Bhayander station some months ago even though it falls under his Thane Lok Sabha constituency and, as per protocol, he should have been invited as a guest.

According to Western Railway officials, in order to pacify Vichare, both WR general manager GC Agarwal and divisional railway manager Mukul Jain had to go to Bhayander with Vichare for an inspection of the station and its newly constructed toilet block.

On Wednesday, railway minister Suresh Prabhu inaugurated a new platform and booking office at Bandra Terminus, escalators at Goregaon and an elevated booking office at Kandivli by way of a video-conferenced function held at Rail Bhavan in New Delhi. Parallel functions held in Mumbai saw BJP Lok Sabha MP from North Mumbai Gopal Shetty as chief guest at the Kandivli function and BJP MLA Ashish Shelar at the Bandra Terminus function.

While WR officials refused to speak on record, some said a few officials in-charge of organising these functions might see action taken against them. "The protocol for railway functions is very clear and elaborate. There is no way an official can commit a mistake with this. An MP needs to be given the respect he deserves as a public representative," agreed a senior WR official.
