BHOPAL: This might be straight out of Ripley's Believe It or Not, as Madhya Pradesh police went to arrest a man for a crime which he 'committed' two years after his death.
The revelation that the accused that they were looking for had died two years before the date of occurrence of crime came as a shock for the police team in Dindori district, which had last week gone to arrest him following court orders.
Now, after getting death certificate, senior police officials have ordered a probe to find how a case was registered against a dead man.
Ranga Singh, son of Manku Singh and resident of Chowradadar village under Gopalpur police station, died a natural death on October 13, 2012. On May 21, 2014, an accident took place and a case was registered against Ranga who was reportedly "driving a Bolero car" that hit and injured two women.
Later, he was also "arrested" and a chargesheet was also put up by police in court. "The accused was not coming for hearing, so court issued a warrant. When police team went to execute the warrant, family members claimed that he died in 2012. Later, they also submitted his death certificate," SP Dindori M L Chhari told TOI.
"We have ordered an inquiry into the matter. Prima facie, it seems that someone was using the driving license of Ranga after his death and was driving the vehicle as Ranga when the accident took place. The owner of the vehicle was also told that the driver is Ranga," Chhari said.
