FACT gets nod to transport chemicals

KOCHI: District collector M G Rajamanickam on Tuesday permitted Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Ltd (FACT) to resume transportation of chemical substances like ammonia via barge.
The decision was taken after the FACT management implemented safety recommendations for the inspection report prepared by the department of Factories and Boilers, police and Fire and Rescue services after the ammonia spill incident on May 20.
"We've already implemented conditions such as setting up a public address system with a siren onboard the barge to warn people in case of an emergency. Other safety measures like remote-operated valve will be implemented in a phased manner,"a FACT spokesperson said.
