It's no secret that we're fans of Volvo's blue-tastic performance sub-brand Polestar. The V60 Polestar is one of the coolest oddballs on sale today, and the company promises great things in the future. We know that full-bore Polestar editions of the V90 wagon and S90 sedan are on their way,  and they're rumored to produce crazy power

Volvo R&D boss Peter Mertens confirmed to Motor Trend last week that the S90 and V90 Polestar will reach production and that U.S.-sales are a possibility. MT also reports that Volvo could make a 600-hp version of the S90/V90, which Jalopnik corroborated in its first drive review of the regular S90/V90.

A Volvo spokesperson said in an email to Road & Track that the 600 horsepower figure is "purely speculative," but it doesn't seem to us like a number that's entirely misguided, though. Volvo Polestar is developing a twin-turbo and supercharged inline-four that can produce 450 horsepower, and Motor Trend notes that Volvo uses an 87-hp electric motor in its T8 Twin-Engine hybrid system.

Theoretically then, we have a car with a total output of 537 horsepower with that component set, but MT says the electric motor would likely be replaced by a more powerful unit. So, a 600-horse hybrid four-cylinder Volvo certianly isn't impossible, even if it does sound somewhat implausible.

A car with that much power would be a direct rival to the BMW M5, Cadillac CTS-V, and Mercedes-AMG E63. We know Volvo wants to compete with the Germans, but does it really want to compete with them in that segment?

We'll have to wait to see if Volvo decides to put a car with that much power in production, but we're huge fans of the idea. I mean, who wouldn't want a 600-hp Swedish turbobrick?
