The Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) has announced it is planning to spend 1.3 million Swiss francs ($1.4 million) on purchasing a road, which goes through the Swiss Air Force base in the commune of Payerne to be able to control Swiss airspace outside office hours.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — This road connects the communes of Morens and Payerne and local residents can use the road out of the Swiss Air Force’s normal working hours. This purchase will deprive the public from the access to the road, allowing the government to implement 24/7 security protection of the base in Payerne.

"The Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) has offered to the commune Morens a redemption of the road, which amounts to 1.3 million francs. The price involves not only the value of the road but also the consequences of its closure for the public," DDPS said in a statement issued on Monday.

Swiss Voters Reject Basic $2,500 Income Proposal at Nationwide Referendum
This measure was taken two years after the Swiss Air Force was slammed by the international community over failure to accompany a hijacked aircraft to Geneva airport. The incident took place early in the morning out of Swiss Air Forces' working time.

On February 17, 2014, an Ethiopian Airlines plane en route to Rome was hijacked by Ethiopian co-pilot Hailemedehin Abera Tagegn. When the first pilot left the cabin, a hijacker locked the door, said the plane was seized and headed to Geneva. The plane, accompanied by French and Italian fighter jets, was forced to land in Geneva, where Tagegn was arrested. In May 2014, Swiss authorities rejected to extradite Tagegn to Ethiopia, claiming he would be brought to justice in Switzerland.
