Silchar: Police on Sunday rounded up seven miscreants who were allegedly involved in an abduction racket from Silchar and its surrounding areas.
The miscreants have been identified as Pankaj Phukan, 38, of Dhemaji, Chandra Mohan Rajbangshi, 45, a resident of Jirighat in Cachar, Dhanesh Hijai, 32, of Dihangi in Dima Hasao, Pabirta Hojai, 24, of the same locality, Parthajit Thaosen, 31, a resident of Diyongmukh in Dima Hasao, Debasis Rajwar, 20, of Shrikona in Cachar and Mrinmoy Chaudhury, 38, a worker of Bikrampore Tea Estate in the same district and a resident of the Nivia locality of Karimganj.

SP (Cachar) Rajveer on Monday said Pankaj and Chandra Mohan are surrendered Ulfa militants, Dhanesh is the self-styled 'commander-in-chief' of DHD (Action) and Pabitra, a member of the outfit.
He said Parthajit has been identified as a former jawan of 21 Indian Reserve battalion.
The gang had been active in abduction and extortion activities in southern Assam for a long time, he said and added that it had planned to kidnap the manager of Bikrampore tea estate.
