The State Information Commission has imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on Kanwar Narinder Singh, tehsildar, Ludhiana (West), for not paying compensation to a complainant. He has been asked to appear in person before the commission on the next date of hearing.

The commission had in April last year directed the tehsildar to pay Rs 2,000 to complainant Balwinder Singh Bains for not providing information timely. However, even after a year, the compensation was not paid.

Taking strong notice, Chief Information Commissioner SS Channy ordered the tehsildar, who is Public Information Officer too, to pay Rs 2,000 to the commission, besides the compensation to the complainant.

The commission also directed the tehsildar to appear in person or bailable warrants would be issued against him.

Bains said he had applied via the Right to Information Act for the documents of a property in Ludhiana.

The information commission noted his suffering saying the tehsildar not only ignored the orders of the commission but also wasted time and energy of the complainant.
