Comedies in India may not particularly be known for their intelligent humour. A list of the 10 most memorable films in the genre

New Delhi: Multi-starrer comedy Housefull 3 that opened last week may not have worked for most critics but with an opening weekend collection of 53.31 crore, it seems to be a hit with the audiences. Comedies in India may not particularly be known for their intelligent humour but here are ten films that in the genre that are the most memorable.

1. Half Ticket (1962)- The Kishore Kumar and Madhubala film was directed by Kalidas and based on the Hollywood movie You’re Never Too Young. It made 60 lakh at the box office.

2. Padosan (1968)- Considered one of the best Indian comedies, the Sunil Dutt, Saira Banu, Mehmood and Kishore Kumar-starrer was directed by Jyoti Swaroop. It made more than 2 crore during release and still spawns parodies of its song sequences.

3. Chupke Chupke (1975)- Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s multi-starrer featured names like Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan and Om Prakash. A remake of Bengali movie Chhadmabeshi, it earned about a crore in box office collections.

4. Gol Maal (1979)- Not too many films get the dual role-confusion as right as Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s cult classic. Starring Amol Palekar and Utpal Dutt in memorable roles, the film became one of the highest grossers of its release year.

5. Angoor (1982)- The Gulzar classic starred Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Verma in double roles and was based on Shakespeare’s farcical play on mistaken identities A Comedy Of Errors. The film that also featured Moushmi Chatterjee and Deepti Naval made 1.5 crore at the box office.

6. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983)- Kundan Shah’s satirical comedy provided a social comment on rampant corruption in Indian politics, bureaucracy, news media and business. The cast featured names like Naseeruddin Shah, Ravi Baswani, Om Puri and Pankaj Kapur and the film made about 2 crore at the time of release.

7. Chameli Ki Shaadi (1986)- Basu Chatterjee’s comedy was a satire on the caste system, and featured Anil Kapoor and Amrita Singh. The film has gained much acclaim over the years though it did average business during release.

8. Andaz Apna Apna (1994)- The Aamir Khan and Salman Khan-starrer was directed by Rajkumar Santoshi but had failed to make a mark at the box office despite the star cast. Having made 5.5 crore during release, it has emerged as a cult classic over the years.

9. Hera Pheri (2000)- The Priyadarshan comedy starring Akshay Kuamr, Suniel Shetty, Paresh Rawal and Tabu in lead roles was a remake of the 1989 Malayalam film Ramji Rao Speaking. It made about 10 crore during release and is widely regarded as one of the finest comedies of its time.

10. Munnabhai MBBS (2003)- Rajkumar Hirani’s trend setting comedy drama revolved around a goon who goes to medical school, played by Sanjay Dutt. It made more than 7 crore at the box office and won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film.
