“#NowThatsACoupe,” said Audi when they teased the A5 last week. The German automaker has finally taken the wraps off the Sportback, in both the A5 and the S5 guise. Audi says that the new A5 is 'athletic, sporty and elegant', and we cannot help but nod our heads in approval.

The A5 is based on the new Audi A4, which we drove in Germany last month. However, design cues are visibly different, and more in line with the upcoming A8 that was spotted testing. It does get trademark Audi elements, such as the hexagonal grille and the LED headlamps. We like the proportions on the A5 — the long bonnet, flared wheel arches and the short tail gives it a lot of character. Add the crisp character lines and the long wheelbase to the mix, and what you have is a good looking coupe. Its sportier cousin, the S5 kicks things up a notch by incorporating classic 'S-line' elements such as a sharper bumper, larger wheels and brushed aluminium finish on the mirror caps and the rear diffuser. There's a mad-hatter RS5 in the pipeline as well that was spotted testing recently.

The interiors get a whole new design that follows the same theme as the updated Audi Q7. The new A5 gets the virtual cockpit as well, that replaces the traditional analogue dials with a 12.3-inch screen that displays the speedometer, tachometer and various other parameters. It also gets a centrally mounted 8.3-inch screen that can be controlled using a touchpad. Other features include an optional Bang & Olufsen sound system, navigation, leather upholstery and ambient lighting. The S5 carries the same interior theme, albeit with subtle changes, such as the flat-bottom steering wheel with paddle shifters and aluminium pedals.

Internationally, the A5 gets two diesel and three petrol motors. If Audi gets the coupe to India, expect it to be powered by either a 190PS, 2.0-litre or a 286PS, 3.0-litre TDi diesel engine. The S5 is powered by a 3.0-litre TFSi turbo-petrol engine that produces 354PS. We had a blast belting the erstwhile S5; take a look at the review to know how it is to drive.

We're certain that Audi will replace the existing S5 with the new one. The A5 has been spotted testing in India multiple times, and there's a good chance of it coming to our shores.
