Liquor contractor shot in Safidon

Virender Rathi (40), alias Narinder, a liquor contractor, was shot dead by micreants in Sahanpur village of Jind district today. The victim’s relative, Satpal Singh of Rohini in New Delhi, who received bullet injuries, was under treatment at a private hospital in Panipat.

The police said the victim was going to his village from Safidon this morning along with his relatives. As the victim’s car approached his village, persons aboard a sports utility vehicle (SUV) bearing a Punjab registration number started firing on Rathi’s vehicle.

SHO Nar Singh said Rathi abandoned his vehicle and ran towards nearby fields. The accused chased Rathi and shot him dead. On hearing gunshots, villagers rushed towards the spot but the accused managed to escape. Villagers informed the victim's family and took the injured to hospital in a critical condition.

Rathi raised his liquor vast empire within a short time. He enjoyed good political links. The police are working on different theories, including business rivalry. On the complaint of the deceased’s brother, Raj Karan, a case of murderhas been registered. The police handed over the body to the victim’s family after autopsy.
