Stir effect: Trash piles up, stench chokes city
Lucknow: Residents of Alambagh, Kanpur Road, LDA colony, Aashiana and Krishnanagar have for the past week been walking miles to dump domestic waste into trash cans. In most of the residential colonies, piles of garbage may be spotted every few meters, following the ongoing strike of sanitary workers who go door-to-door to collect garbage in the areas.
Hired by Jyoti Envirotech, sanitation workers have accused the company of not paying their monthly wages for past two months. Representatives of the agency managing solid waste in the city said since the Lucknow Municipal Corporation has not paid its share of Rs 10 crore, it is not possible to pay the sanitation workers.
The departments responsible for taking care of garbage generated in the city are busy with a blame game, while residents are facing harsh consequences. "From past over a week I have to walk half a kilometer to get a bin where I can dump my domestic waste and it is the only bin in our colony used by everybody but since it is not cleaned on a daily basis, there is a huge pile of garbage," said Hansika Kapoor, a resident of Krishnanagar.
Sanvi Tiwari, a resident of LDA Kanpur road said that in her colony residents are disposing waste near parks and at the plots lying vacant. "Neither our garbage is taken away nor streets and by lanes have been cleaned for the past many days. As a result residents in the vicinity have to bear pungent stench of rotting garbage all day and face a filthy site everytime they step out."
Residents of Zone 5 are still reeling under garbage woes while sanitation condition of these aeas is badly hit. Charanjeet Singh, owner of Jyotienvirotech said issue of nonpayment of salary had been resolved two days backs and workers have resumed work. "In many parts of zone 5 the sanitary workers have started the door-to-door collection, while some areas are left but they will be covered too in a day or two."
