KANPUR: A 55-year-old man, who had left his Hardoi residence on Saturday morning but did not return home, was found murdered by the side of GT road in Kannauj district on Sunday.
Alok Narain alias Ramu Tiwari, a native of Harpalpur in Hardoi district, was found bundled up inside a sack at Sadarpur Rooppur road close to GT road in Gursahaiganj police station area, on Sunday evening.
Police, who suspect that the man was strangulated to death with the help of a rope, have registered a murder case.
Few persons have been picked up for interrogation after the victim’s family members voiced suspicion that they might have a hand in the killing.
"The deceased was a native of Harpalpur in Hardoi district. He had left his house on Saturday morning. When, he did not return home, the family members tried calling up on his mobile phone, but it was switched off. Finally, they lodged a missing person report with Harpalpur police at night," said a police officer, adding that he used to lend money to locals on interest.
After receiving the complaint, Harpalpur police launched a search in the night but in vain.
"It appears that the assailants abducted the man from Hardoi and murdered him somewhere else before dumping the body in Kannauj. More than one person was involved," said officer in charge of Gursahaiganj police station.
Gursahaiganj police, who recovered the body, could not establish the identity initially and sent it to district hospital for post-mortem. A wireless message was circulated across neighbouring Hardoi on the basis of a visiting card recovered from the pocket of the deceased, which was received by Harpalpur police.
The victim’s family was eventually contacted. Family members identified the body as that of Alok's.
