Tom Alter quits, FTII requests him to reconsider move
The academic council of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) has requested actor Tom Alter to reconsider his resignation as head of the acting department.
FTII director Bhupendra Kainthola said he has been authorised to communicate with Alter over his resignation. 'Alter resigned on June 1, saying he wanted to be excused as he was unable to devote time to the institute. The academic council was let down by this and decided to request him to reconsider his resignation,' he said.
Kainthola said that on May 23, students of the acting department had made some allegations against Alter, while the latter, too, had several complaints against the students.

A student of the department said they did have some reservations with Alter's teaching methods but that was not the reason for his resignation. 'On March 4, Alter asked the students of the department to sign a document which enlisted three points. We agreed to the first two points -100% attendance and sitting for classes with joy and exci tement -but not to the third point where he said that students should not interfere in the functioning of the department and do as directed,' the student said.

'Things were okay till we approached actor Naseeruddin Shah to hold a workshop with us. Alter got miffed. He enlisted the three rules after that and stopped talking to us when we did not sign the document,' the student said.
Alter, who took over as head of the acting department in November 2014, did not respond to a mail sent to him seeking his version.
