Innovation needs to be incentivised in educational and research instiutes

Hyderabad, Jun 3 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Industries and Commerce Department Additional Director Mr B Suresh Babu today mentioned that Andhra Pradesh Government is taking initiatives to promote technology development and the culture of innovation.
Speaking at the inauguration session on 'National IPR policy : Way Forward" organised by Andhra Pradesh Technology Development & Promotion Centre (APTDC) of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) , here, Mr Suresh said there is a need to promote the independent innovators from startups.
In his special address, Dr S Chakravarthy, Former Special Chief Secretary, Government of AP, Member of MRTP Commission, and Honorary Adviser of APTDC, highlighted the issues of compulsory licensing, artlicle 3(d) of patent act and mentioned that according to Doha Declaration, India is complying to it and also said that access to medicines is a ground for compulsory licensing.
He mentioned that there is a need to be a level playing field to bring real innovation coupled with IPR Dr Padmaja S, Director, iProPAT Intellectual Property Solutions opined that smaller innovations are being protected by the article 3(d) of patent act and said that universities need to be incentivized like startups and SMEs.
Dr Goutam Bhattacharyya, Partner, K&S Partners said that commercialization and Technology transfer offices are to be present in universities.
Mr K V Satyanarayana, Assistant General Manager & Head - Information Resource Centre, Tata Consultancy Services, said that Make in India should be IP in IP intensive so that they create, invent and then make in India.
Dr G B Reddy, Professor of Law, Osmania University said that there is a need of demystification of IPR in educational institutions from school level.
Mr Ramesh B Vishwanathula, Founder and Chief Attorney, Vishwanath & Global Attorneys said that IP offices have to be strengthened and the backlogs in the cloaring of patent and trademark applications have to speed up.
Dr A K S Bhujanga Rao, President - R&D and Technical, NATCO Pharma said that pharma industry needs to be moved from generic industry.
The program was well attended by more than 50 participants from Industry, Academia and Legal & IP sectors.
