Lifeline: Whiteout is a rare thriller game for smartphones

Available for Android and iOS platforms, this game offers the rare experience of reading and actually being a part of thriller story

Lifeline: Whiteout is a rare mobile game which refutes the notion that games are basically time killers meant to fight away boredom. This is an interactive game which makes playing games a permanent feature of your life, perhaps like messaging or checking the news update.

What is it all about?

The game is about a survivor of an accident that took place in some remote Alsakan mountain. He has been trying to contact someone from the outside world using the radio or whatever piece of computer he has been able to salvage from the wreck. The man calls himself Adam, as that is written on the patch on his jacket, and doesn’t remember what exactly happened which led him to his current situation. Adam manages to establish connection with you, making you his only contact or aid from the outside world. What happens is a series of unending conversation between you and Adam where he seeks your counsel in matters where he is either confused or unable to make a decision himself.

The main objective is to assist Adam find help before he freezes to death. How you counsel him and the interest you show will decide Adam’s fate.

How it works?

The game begins like a chat page of some highly encrypted messenger albeit in a more colourful layout. Initially Adams seems like a chatty character who is going to bore you to death with every little detail. But actually, he is trying to fill you in with every bit of detail of what he sees, so you can keep them in mind. You can also go back to the previous chats in case you are unable to recall things.

Every time Adams sends a message it pops up on your screen if the game is open. If not, it shows in the notification window. Just head to it, see what he has found and if he wants your opinion on something. You can select from the multiple options available to you in response to the questions. The option you choose has to be based on the facts that Adams provides you. At times you have to put yourself into Adams’ shoes and use your own experiences borrowed from a movie or book on survivors. If the connection breaks or Adams dies, you can resume the game from the last checkpoint saved by the game. Also, there is a fast mode which can skip delays and waiting periods, so you can play it at a stretch too.

The only limitation is that you have to choose from the given options and give your own suggestions to Adams.

Is it worth downloading?

Lifeline: Whiteout is one of the best proponents of the new genre of games which rely on a powerful storyline rather than stunning visuals to keep gamers engrossed. The game can be played anytime, anywhere. All you need is a couple of minutes at work, or when you are having lunch with one hand occupied. You can check out Adams’ position, help him out and get back to your work. The challenge with a full-blown thriller like the Max Payne Mobile (here the lead character has foggy memory of his past) is that not everyone can play it. First you need a smartphone with a good configuration and a good battery backup. Then you need to be good at handling on-screen touch controls. This games takes up 89MB after installation, can run on any smartphone and works offline. All you need is an appetite for thrillers.
