Chennai: Burglars struck at the house of a textile shop owner in Nandanam and escaped with 20 lakh worth of gold and diamond jewellery and 6 lakh in cash on Wednesday night.
The burglars removed a window grille near the back door to enter the place and broke open three cupboards before taking away valuables.
Police said the incident came to light when house owner Amit Khanna's wife came home after her vacation in Hyderabad.
Amit, who runs a textile shop on Cathedral Road with his father Raman Khanna, was on a business trip to Delhi.
Returning with her children, Amit Khanna's wife found the cupboards broken open. The locks of the main door were intact. Amit's parents were also away, on a tour to Kodaikanal. Amit's wife alerted the police control room and a team rushed to the spot with sniffer dogs.
A police officer said six sets of fingerprints were lifted from the house. "We are looking if the fingerprints match those of any known offender," he said.
The house has two entrances. The family had stored textile material in a room on the first floor where a man and two women employees were engaged in stitching dresses.
"They were employed just two months ago and were give a separate key for the room on the first floor," a police officer said. A driver is said to have joined the family recently.
The burglars must have targeted the house after seeing it locked since Sunday, police said. The house neither had CCTV cameras nor a security guard. Police have collected CCTV camera footage from a nearby building. The family is yet to furnish the exact amount of jewellery missing from the house, a police officer said.
