Fires spark demand for wall along Uttan garbage dump
MUMBAI: Even as sporadic fires continue to be reported from the Uttan dumping ground in Bhayander (west), a demand for constructing a wall around the dump yard has been made by the Congress.
Last month, a fire had been reported from the yard. It was put out by the fire brigade and a police case was filed against unknown persons. On Sunday, sporadic fire was again reported from the yard.
The municipality dumps around 450 tonnes of garbage daily at the yard. The garbage is dumped without scientifically recycling it. The recycling plant was shut down in 2009, following protests by nine villages in the locality.
Congress member of legislative council, Muzaffar Hussain, met municipal commissioner Achyut Hange and demanded that a wall be constructed around the yard and round-the-clock security be put up to ensure that no mischief is done by setting garbage on fire.
