Neven Maguire's welcome for breastfeeding mothers

Neven Maguire.

Chef Neven Maguire is one of the first restaurant owners in the country to display a new sign welcoming breastfeeding mothers.

Neven, who runs MacNean House and Restaurant in Cavan, features the new 'Breastfeeding Welcome Here' mark, which is set to be rolled out to other public places, including shopping centres.

It will mean new mothers have the reassurance that they can go ahead and breastfeed without the fear of breaching any rules or regulations.

The sign is the idea of the First 1,000 Days promoted by Danone which aims to improve awareness of the importance of good nutrition for babies from conception to their second birthday.

The signs are supported by the bodies representing nutritionists and practice nurses, and will also be displayed in Insomnia coffee shops, Boots pharmacies and Arnotts department store.

Breastfeeding has long-term benefits for a baby, lasting right into adulthood.

Giving nothing but breast milk is recommended for about the first six months (26 weeks) of a baby's life.

After that, giving baby breast milk alongside family foods for the first two years, or for as long as a mother and baby want, will help them grow and develop healthily.
