2 held for possessing arms

The city crime branch arrested two persons from Worli on Saturday evening and allegedly seized two 0.32mm pistols and four live cartridges from their possession.

The arrested duo has been identified as Jitendra Akhilanand Tiwari (32) and Anil Chandrikaprasad Shukla (32).

According to Sunil Mane, a senior police inspector of crime branch Unit III, on receiving a specific tip-off that two people in the possession of firearms would be arriving near a petrol pump at Worli, a trap was laid. The duo was nabbed as soon as they arrived at the spot.

The police seized two 0.32mm pistols from Tiwari and four live cartridges from Shukla. They were booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Indian Arms Act, the police said.

Mane added, "During our preliminary investigations, we came to know that Tiwari, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, is a member of the panchayat committee in his village and runs a real estate business in Mumbai. He would always carry firearms on him due to security reasons. We have presented the duo before a court in Kurla on Sunday. The court then remanded the duo to judicial custody."
