CBI backs accused to be approver in coal scam case
New Delhi: The CBI on Monday supported the plea of an accused to become an approver in the Amarkonda coal scam case in which industrialist and Congress functionary Naveen Jindal is an accused.
It told a special court chartered accountant and New Delhi Exim Pvt Ltd director Suresh Singhal's plea was likely to strengthen the prosecution's case. Ex-minister of state for coal Dasari Narayan Rao, former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda, and 12 others are accused in the case along with Jindal and Singhal.

The case pertains to alleged irregularities in allocation of Amarkonda Murgadangal coal block to Jindal's firms in 2008. Singhal had moved his plea on April 21, seeking pardon besides wanting to become an approver.
Separately, special judge Bharat Parashar asked the CBI "not to be so slow'' in its investigations and fixed June 6 as the date for pronouncing its order on Singhal's plea.
The court took note of several accused filing "unnecessary applications" and asked them to refrain from doing so. "The case has now moved beyond the point of charge. Reserve applications for genuine reasons," the court said while warning strong action.
The court was responding to applications seeking exemptions from personal appearance on medical grounds, without medical certificates.
