The Federation for People’s Rights has urged the Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi to intervene and order a judicial probe into the lathicharge on Congress workers at Kalapet on Saturday.

In a statement, G. Sugumaran, secretary of Federation for People’s Rights said the police resorted to caning and beat the protesters indiscriminately after they blocked traffic on the East Coast Road and picketed a hotel protesting against the decision to elect Narayanasamy as the Congress Legislature Party leader.

He said that one Vijayan sustained severe injuries and has been admitted to a private hospital in Chennai. The condition of Vijayan is said to be critical.

Though everyone was aware that trouble was brewing during the meeting of Congress MLAs in the hotel the failure on the part of the police to ensure proper security on the premises resulted in the violent incident, he said.

The Lieutenant Governor should immediately intervene and order a judicial probe by a retired Judge of the Madras High Court and suspend the police personnel involved in the incident.

The Federation will take up the issue with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), he said.
