Two people were arrested in connection with a Maryland murder Sunday morning after an Arizona state trooper made a traffic stop on Interstate 40 west of Kingman, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.

State Trooper J. Gigous was traveling eastbound on I-40 at about 7:14 a.m. when he scanned the Pennsylvania license plate of a GMC Sonoma pickup truck that was traveling in the same direction, DPS said.

The scan alerted Gigous that the pickup truck was wanted in Maryland in connection with the murder of Margaret Rose McAllister, 81, of Hancock, Maryland, according to DPS.

A string of troopers stopped the vehicle and arrested Jerry W. Smith, 43, and Crystal Stanley, 39, of Needmore Pa.

The pair were taken into custody without incident and booked into Mohave County Jail until they can be extradited to Maryland, DPS said.
