The Longines Handicap de las Americas is Mexico’s biggest horse race and the country’s premier race for older horses, and it is the first time ever in 71 editions of the race that a horse has won the main prize of the Hippodrome of the Americas on three consecutive occasions.
After their comfortable success of twelve months ago, hopes were high that Diamante Negro could once again repeat the feat and rewrite the history books in the process.
And the six-year-old son of the Sadlers Wells stallion Election Day did exactly that, by easily defeating 2015 Mexican Triple Crown winner Huitlacoche, while American-bred Portugues finishing third.
Trained by Samuel Cruz Rodriguez, Diamante Negro is owned by Paula Martinez’ Cuadra Mapa, and under jockey Moises Gonzalez Diamante Negro saw Huichol set the early pace but was cruising along nicely keeping in touch in the early stages.
However on the final turn, Huitlacoche moved to the lead but Gonzalez had Diamante Negro in full flight, looping the field and rallying into the stretch.
Diamante Negro quickly seized command and drew off to win easily by two lengths covering the distance on a fast track in a time of two minutes and two seconds.
The victory was Diamante Negro’s 14th success in 34 career starts and his purse from the Handicap de Las Americas pushed him over six-million pesos lifetime, making him the first Mexican based horse to hit that milestone.
The winning owner, trainer and jockey were awarded elegant Longines watches by Edith Chavez, Brand Manager Longines Mexico.
